Lake Michigan wasn’t just affected by one Ice Age but four over the last 2 million years. The basin of the lake, however, was put in its present form by glaciers from the latest one, the Wisconsin Period. Meltwater gave it its start, forming glacial lakes that grew beyond the current shorelines but then shrank when the retreating glaciers unblocked the passage between Lakes Michigan and Huron. This allowed waters to drain east around 6000 BC. The lake’s name comes from the Ojibwe mishigami, which means “great water.” French explorer Jean Nicolet is believed to have been the first European to see the lake in the 1630s.

Lake Michigan is the only Great Lake that is wholly within US borders. Its 1,640 miles of shoreline show sandy beaches and dunes in many places, and once you get north of the Milwaukee area, the towns along its shores are small and slow-paced yet offer a great variety of things to see and do.

The perfect place to start a trip along this lake is Kohler-Andrae State Park. When the sun rises over the deep blue waters and strikes the tops of the dunes and the miles of sandy shoreline, you get the full effect of the natural beauty of this park. On this byway you will find many lovely views along the shores, but this is arguably the best and the most pristine. The park’s Sanderling Nature Center provides a fascinating educational element, and with 105 campsites, you can make much more than a day trip out of a visit here.
