NONDESCRIPT ENTRANCE TO A WORLD WAR II BATTERY AT CAPE HENLOPEN

Luckily, a land invasion never materialized. However, ships did go down in the Atlantic, and Americans were fearful throughout the war.

Cape May’s Fire Control Tower No. 23 has been preserved as the World War II Lookout Tower Museum, and visitors can climb the restored coastal artillery lookout tower. Once part of the immense harbor defense at Fort Miles, the tower was built in 1942 as one of 15 towers in the system. Inside, a spiral staircase leads to the top.

On the other side of the bay, at former Battery 519 in Cape Henlopen State Park outside Lewes, is the Fort Miles Museum. Besides the museum and remnants of Fort Miles’s towers and bunkers, the state park there offers beaches, two lighthouses in the harbor, a bird habitat, and gorgeous dunes. It can be moody and somewhat deserted at times, depending on the season and the weather, but it is nonetheless appealing. Calm now reigns on both sides of the Delaware Bay after the serious military threats of World War II. Only remnants, and many memories, survive from that time.

On your way out of Cape May, leave via Washington Street. After the road curves to the left, make a right onto the little bridge at the marina. Follow that street around until you see signs for US 9 South (Sandman Boulevard). Follow the signs to the Cape May–Lewes Ferry. When you get to Ferry Road, turn left and stop at the check-in booth.

The only tricky part is the jughandle, where you’ll go to the right and partially around in order to go left. Jughandle is a New Jersey term for heading to the right in order to come around to the left.
