EPILOGUE

CLAIRE HELD HER towel tight against her chest as she slowly pushed open the door to the sauna, the steam rolling out into the hallway as the cool air of the outside enveloped her.

‘The coast is clear,’ she whispered, giggling as she turned back to the others who were lined up behind, anxiously wondering if there might a sour-faced employee waiting for them, ready to rescind their memberships and hand them over to security, but there was no one there.

They crept out, closing the door quietly and giggling like naughty children as they tiptoed to their lockers and dressed quickly, exchanging guilty and knowing looks and stealing glances as their skin disappeared into their normal clothes and a sense of slightly awkward normality returned.

As they skipped out into the entrance foyer, Ashleigh turned around, her heart pounding as she took hold of Claire’s hand and smiled. ‘What do you want to do now?’

Claire froze, like a deer in the headlights at the enthusiasm exuding from her best friend. ‘Umm, I don’t know?’ she glanced sidelong at her husband who grinned and shrugged before turning to Jay and winking. ‘Are we…?’

‘We’ve got a reservation at Piccolito’s,’ said Noah. ‘For dinner.’

‘Oh,’ said Claire, disappointed. ‘Could we…?’

‘Cancel it?’ he finished.

‘And eat here?’ she said hopefully.

He winked and nodded as she squeezed Ashleigh’s hand with renewed excitement.

‘I,’ wavered Ashleigh as she blushed. ‘I don’t want this to be a one off,’ she said.

‘This isn’t like last time,’ said Claire.

‘You need to tell us about this last time ,’ said Jay, grinning. ‘In detail.’

‘Perhaps we could show you?’ laughed Claire as she too blushed, fingering Ashleigh’s palm.

‘You know,’ said Ashleigh, quietly. ‘They have rooms here?’

Claire’s eyes grew wide as her heart skipped a beat. ‘Are you suggesting?’

‘We stay the night?’ shrugged Ashleigh, with a wild smile as she bit down on her lip.

‘Skip dinner?’ breathed Claire.

‘Uh huh ,’ whispered her friend, wobbling closer as she held back.

‘I’ll go get us a room,’ said Jay, throwing his bag over his shoulder as he marched toward the front desk, leaving Noah stood awkwardly as the two girls stared into each others eyes.

After a moment, he looked away and pointed toward the disappearing figure of Jay. ‘I’ll go with him.’

Claire smiled and winked as he turned and half fled. Then she looked back at Ashleigh and took her other hand. ‘Thank you,’ she said.

’Took you long enough,’ she laughed .

’What’s ten years between friends?’ she grinned.

‘Time wasted?’

‘Then we’d best make up for it.’

‘Starting now,’ and Ashleigh leaned forward and kissed her.

For a moment she panicked as they stood, their lips pressed together, in the middle of the entrance foyer of the posh spa, then she took a deep breath and relaxed, dropping her bag and sinking into it.

Relishing it.

After a few moments they separated and sighed, laughing and smiling.

‘I love you,’ said Claire, gushing.

Ashleigh laughed and blushed. ‘And I love you too.’
