Chapter 18

Usually, Regina found dating as boring as watching the weather forecast and couldn’t wait for the date to end.

But as she walked Ellie to her front door, that feeling was strangely absent, maybe because too many other emotions were tumbling through her.

She couldn’t believe she had told Ellie about Riley. Her skin prickled as if she’d rubbed it raw—had said too much and made herself too vulnerable. Or maybe it was remnants of the tingly sensation that had spread through her when Ellie had taken her hand. It had been an innocent gesture, yet somehow, it felt more intimate than a kiss. She still couldn’t believe she had returned the gesture and held hands with Ellie, a co-worker, for a moment.

Ellie shuffled her feet on her front porch. “Do you want to come in?”

Regina wrenched her gaze to Ellie’s eyes, which made her realize she’d been looking at her mouth.

“For a drink,” Ellie added.

Regina allowed a grin that felt mostly authentic to spread across her face. “So you admit you lost the ice-skating race and owe me a drink?”

“Ha! No. But you did win all but one of the axe-throwing games, so…” Ellie swept her arm toward the front door.

Regina hesitated. The annoying photographer was gone, and all of her auction obligations were fulfilled. There was no reason to prolong this—other than she really wanted to.

Her stomach lurched at the realization.

No. Tell her good night and thanks for bidding on a good cause. If she left now, she’d be fine by tomorrow. In the fluorescent lights of the ED, she would be able to put this entire whirlwind of an evening into the right perspective. Ellie would be just one of the nurses again.

Yeah, right.

“Um, thanks, but I’d better go.” Regina vaguely gestured toward her car. “I’m working tomorrow.” It was a feeble excuse, considering it was only eight thirty and Ellie would be working the same shift.

Even in the dim light of the porch, Regina could see Ellie’s face fall.

“Me too, so you’re right. We’d better call it a night.” Ellie set the bag from the restaurant down and reached into her purse, probably looking for her keys. “Ouch.”

Damn. Now she’d hurt Ellie. What a mess. “I didn’t say no to hurt you. I just… Me coming in… Not a good idea.”

“Oh, no, no. Not you.” Ellie pulled her hand with the keys out of her purse and tapped her index finger. “I thought the splinter from earlier was gone, but I just felt it.”

“Let me see.”

“In this light?” Ellie shook her head. “You wouldn’t be able to find an entire branch sticking out of my hand, much less a tiny little splinter. I’ll pull it out once I’m inside.”

Regina arched her brows. “With your left hand?”

“I’m sure I’ll manage.”

“Managing isn’t good enough,” Regina told her. “Not when you have CMC’s most talented emergency physician at your service.”

“At my service, huh?” The grin was obvious in Ellie’s tone. “Does that mean you’re coming in after all?”

Instead of a verbal reply, Regina took the key from her and unlocked the door.
