CHAPTER EIGHT
WREN
Ipaced the short hallway of the cabin rental, nerves a tangled ball in my stomach. Dinner with Declan. Alone. No prying eyes or young, shifter ears within miles.
Dangerous didnât begin to cover it.
Mate, heâd called me. In a tone like his entire world hinged on that word.
Maybe his had. Maybe mine had, too.
There was a part of me, the part that would always belong to him, that craved exactly that. Weâd had something so good once. So overwhelming, and so right. It would be all too easy to slip back into something similar, with Declan filling those achingly lonely gaps of the last six years.
I wanted his strong hands and urgent tongue back on me, wiping away my doubts with toe-curling pleasure. I wanted to run headfirst into the promise of love and safety his eyes offered. I wanted to give Declan a real chance to prove his worth.
So much still felt unsettled between us, questions left unvoiced. But time with Declan had always carried an intoxicating magic I was helpless to resist. Absolutely nothing had changed in that regard.
A firm knock made me jump. Declan, punctual down to the last second. I smoothed my shirt and skirt down for the tenth time and yanked the door open.
Declan filled the doorway in dark jeans and tee, smelling like deliciously deep spice. He raked his heated gaze down my body and back up again, lips parting with appreciation.
âYou look beautiful.â Reluctantly, he turned his attention to the empty cabin behind me. âWhereâs Liam?â
âSleepover with Dahlia and Ayla.â I offered a small smile. âThey jumped at the chance to spoil him rotten with too much ice cream and a late bedtime.â
Declanâs face fell, and I struggled to hide an inappropriate smile. Apparently, I wasnât the only one susceptible to our sonâs charms. Something soft and tender thawed another layer of ice around my heart. We werenât a white picket fence family, or even a family yet, but he showed up and wanted to try.
How could I resist that?
âNext time,â I promised. As I stepped outside, I pressed a hand lightly to Declanâs forearm in reassurance. His warmth seeped instantly through to my palm.
âIâll hold you to that.â His green eyes sparked with banked heat as he curled his fingers around mine. âNow, câmon. I want to show you my favorite place in the Hollow.â
With a roguish wink, he wrapped a guiding arm around my waist, tucking me close against his side as we made the quick trip off the porch. The clean notes of pine and sandalwood perfumed his shirt, every inhale filling me with memories of stolen moments once upon a summer. I shivered in pleasure, tension leaching steadily away.
My steps faltered when Declan bypassed his truck and instead steered us toward the trails at the side of the cabin. Unease pricked the back of my neck even as he slid me an easy grin.
âJust a short hike. Promise itâs worth it.â
I bit my lip, old doubts rising swiftly. Heâd had ample opportunity to harm me if that was his goal.
