CHAPTER 18 - CHRISTIAN

Mr. Bedore and I walk into the restaurant at nearly the same time, but Megan’s not yet here. We get a nice table in the corner, order a bottle of wine, and he launches almost immediately into talking shop.

I try to look as if I’m paying astute attention, but honestly, I’m in a bit of a mood. On my drive here, Michael called to tell me that my big upcoming fight has just been canceled.

Supposedly, my opponent has incurred an injury that renders him unable to participate in the match, but I’m starting to wonder if that’s actually true. Lately, no one has been wanting to fight me.

I suspect it has something to do with the hot streak I’ve been on, and the fact that I’ve been destroying nearly every opponent that has faced me. I don’t think anyone wants to go up against me and add a loss to their fight record. I also think that a few of them might actually be afraid that I’m going to damage them, although that has never happened in any of my legitimate matches before. I’m a stickler for the rules and fight etiquette. I respect the world of MMA too much to dishonor it by causing an injury to my opponent. My intention is never to hurt anyone, only to win the match and progress in my skill.

Now, if we were talking about my street fighting days when I was younger, that would be a whole different story. But I have great respect for the MMA world now and would never do anything to tarnish it.

That’s what makes me so mad when these guys back out of matches. I get that they don’t want to dent their own record and take a loss, but isn’t backing out pretty much the same thing? If it were me, I’d at least want the chance to prove I could beat my opponent, or at least honestly try, instead of feigning an injury just to skip out on the match.

I suppose some men—men with a constitution like Daniel, who think they are God’s gift only to hide their inner inferiority complex—would think it a compliment to their ego that no one wanted to fight them. But how the hell am I supposed to increase my skill and my winning streak if no one will go up against me?

I am mostly tuning out, thinking about the fighting ring and how to ascertain a new opponent, and only partially listening to what Mr. Bedore is saying—when out of the corner of my eye, I see the host walk toward the table with Megan beside him.

I have an instant visceral reaction that causes me to discretely move my hand from above the table to my lap to cover my crotch. I know no one can see down there, but I try to calm down in case I wind up having to stand up for any reason.

If I thought Megan looked attractive before, she looks absolutely breathtaking right now.
