On Friday after work, I picked up Krista and Emmy at their apartment. Iâd been planning this all week, and I couldnât wait to see how theyâd like it.
Honestly, I hadnât been sure where I was going to take them at first. A date that would be sufficiently romantic enough to make up for all of my hurtful indecision, that would also be receptive to a baby? While Emmy was generally well-behaved, there was always the chance of her cryingâand when she did, everyone in a mileâs radius would hear it.
The idea came to me eventually, and as soon as I thought of it, I knew it was perfect. Then all I had to do was find the right place for it. A few minutes of research, and I had a plan.
âSo where are we going?â Krista asked, sliding into the passenger seat of my car with Emmy in her sling.
âUm⦠weâre not.â I glanced at the skirt and flats she was wearing. âNot until you go upstairs and change into jeans and boots. Something you donât mind getting a little dirty.â
She gave me a dubious look. âAnything else?â
âThatâs all, I think.â
She came back a few minutes later, looking like sheâd just stepped out of a catalogue for farm equipment. I wouldâve bought whatever she was selling.
âI didnât mean you had to wear full-on overalls,â I laughed.
She gave me the side-eye. âMost of my pre-pregnancy jeans still donât fit.â
I started the car, and Emmy snuggled into her mother.
âDo I get to find out where weâre going yet?â Krista asked.
âGood try. Youâll know when we get there.â
I kept it secret for as long as I could, but after driving half an hour outside the city, I began to fear Iâd drive past the farm. âOkay, weâre looking for Myers Farm and Market.â
âYouâre taking me to a farm? Seriously?â She sounded incredulous, but her eyes were bright. âThis will be a great experience for Emmy. Not that sheâll remember it.â
âWeâre not going to be mucking around in the dirt,â I told her. âWeâreâoh, dammit, I missed the turn.â
I pulled into the next driveway and waited for a few cars to pass, then turned around. Once we arrived at Myers, Kristaâs face lit up. âWeâre going apple picking!â
âAnd there are pumpkins, too,â I said.
âOh, my God.â She squeezed Emmy. âDid you hear that, baby?â
âMa,â Emmy mumbled.
I backed into a parking spot. âLetâs check this out.â
The air was crisp, and even though the sun was on its downward journey, it still cast plenty of light over the rows of apple trees. The leaves were green, but here and there, you could see an orange or a red one. Fall had arrived, and soon it would be in full swing.
Small groups and families roamed through rows of trees, holding overflowing bags of apples. A haystack sat at the edge of the farm, and beside it was a sign for a wagon ride. A small stand touted hot chocolate and apple cider.
âThis is gorgeous,â Krista breathed, picking up an empty barrel.
