CHAPTER 3
Raid on Oran
Supply convoy, August 13th, 1941
The long line of trucks was stuck all along the road in an open field. They'd tried to sneak as in the past to make it to the relative safety of Oran for the night, but a traffic jam on the road had killed their timetable, and thus, the poor German supply guys were stuck in the open during the last good light of the day. And even unluckier for the truck drivers, Ace pilot Giles Hayes and the Western Mediterranean Air Group 1st Squadron were about to swoop down and bring death to them.
For the British, flyers were on the hunt. They had just flown off from their Marnia air base and had been tasked to find targets on the ground. The goal was to destroy supplies. The Axis forces had been quiet in the last month, but since the fall of Malta, they had restarted to move troops and a lot of supplies near the frontlines. Oran was one of the main logistical hubs for the Germano-Italians and was thus a prime target for Allied aircraft. The squadron had been at it for several days, but the Luftwaffe and Regina Aeronautica's presence were getting a lot heavier in the last few days. It was almost like the Axis were preparing for a new offensive. The ace pilotsâ hunting grounds were about in the middle of the way between Oran and Algier.
"Everybody get ready," said Commander Malan to the rest of the pilots, as the Axis soldiers on the ground could be seen scattering away from their trucks. Some tumbled, some fell, but most ran away as fast as they could. "All pilots are free to fire when ready," continued Malan. As one, they unleashed their ordnance. To the soldiers on the ground trying to run for cover madly, it seemed like the gates of hell had opened. Hundreds upon hundreds of tracer rounds from machine gun bullets and 20 mm cannon shells thundered toward their trucks and, in two seconds, started hitting the ground and their targets. The soil shook, and a deafening noise filled the air. Immediately, towering mounds of earth lifted off the ground; trucks exploded; their canvas roofs easily pierced. The trucks were not armored, so the bullets and shells went right through their thin metal sheet covering. Most scattered everywhere, and others exploded because their fuel tanks were hit. Splinters flew around, hitting soldiers and causing terrible injuries. Some Germano-Italian soldiers were able to drop into holes or small depressions in the ground, saving themselves from the wrath of god falling from above. Others shielded themselves with trees.
From the air, Giles could see the white streaks of his firing guns lining up toward the ground and hitting the mobile enemy units in succession. He righted his fighter as he put on the full gas. On the way up, he got one last chance to inflict some damage and added a few bursts of 20 mm cannon fire for good measure, destroying more trucks.
