Chapter 15

o, what’s your deal, Nick?” Carey asked and sat

opposite Nokomis, who stared at the table.

S “It’s Nokomis,” he said and looked her in the eye.

Carey didn’t blink. “Okay, what’s your deal, Nokomis?” she repeated calmly.

“I don’t have a deal, and I ain’t talking. I know my rights. I get a phone call,” he said and leaned forward.

Carey grinned. “I have an eyewitness who can put you at the bridge that night. If you don’t cooperate…” She stopped and shook her head.

She watched him as he swallowed convulsively. He’s scared shitless, she thought. Of what? She then noticed the deep red bruises on his neck. It looked as if someone…

“I don’t know nothin’,” he said and sat back.

“What happened to your neck? Those look like fresh

bruises, Nick, er, Nokomis,” Carey asked.

Nokomis instinctively put his hand to his neck. “Nothin’

happened. It’s none of your business anyway. Ya got no right to keep me here.”

After an hour or two of arguing back and forth with the detective, Nokomis paced back and forth in his cell. “She can’t be mad at me. I did what she said. I did what she said,” he mumbled.

Carey and Hal watched him on the monitor. “He’s a fucking nutbag,” Hal grunted and drank his coffee.

“He’s a scared nutbag. Look at him. Does he strike you as someone who could pull off these murders and drain a body of blood? And leave no evidence behind? He can’t even pace in a 133

straight line. No, there’s somebody else pulling this kid’s chain,”

Carey said and dropped her cigarette on the floor and stamped it out. “I’m going to go have a chat with Dr. Sebastian later tonight. Maybe she can shed some light on this.” She slipped into her blazer and walked away.

“Where are you going?” Hal asked with a sly grin. “Gonna play nurse and patient?”

Carey picked up her keys and patted his cheek. “None of your business. Page me if you need me, but please, please, give me at least an hour.”

In the darkness of the cellar, Sebastian sat in the leather chair, head back, eyes closed, as she inserted the needle.

Once again, she came close to giving in to her need. That robber had no idea how lucky he was when Sebastian stopped feeding on him. She now settled for the manufactured blood. She rhythmically clenched her fist, sending the rush through her veins.

When she finished, she looked at the side table. It took three bags this time to sate her hunger. She took the needle out and tossed it on the tray table and lay back. Letting out a deep satisfied breath, Sebastian thought of Tatiana and Nicholae.

For nearly a millennium, those two vampires had been like the god and goddess of their dark world, keeping their bloodline pure. Nicholae was from Romania, his vampire bloodline originated in Egypt, whereas Tatiana’s stemmed from ancient Rome and was much older and stronger than Nicholae’s.

Sebastian smiled at the thought of how Tatiana compared humans to vampires in this regard.
