Sage pulled onto Grace Way and shut off the engine. She turned to Alex. âHere we are.â
âYes, here we are,â Alex repeated with a shy grin.
Neither of them made an attempt to move.
âYou still want me to come in?â Sage wanted to give Alex an out if sheâd changed her mind.
âI most definitely do. I guess Iâm just feeling a bit nervous. This new space weâre in, the conversations we had tonight, having you over for the first time . . . It all feels a bit vulnerable.â
âI completely understand.â Sage shifted sideways in her seat. âI want you to know I have no expectations. We can go at whatever pace is comfortable for you. And if me coming in tonight feels like too much, thatâs okay, too.â
Relief shone through in Alexâs expression. âThank you, Sage. That means a lot. I appreciate you being so patient and understanding. And,â she met Sageâs eyes, âI would really like for you to come inâif youâre still up for it.â
That drew a smile from Sage. âI am.â
âOkay, then. Letâs go in!â
Locking the vehicle behind her with the key fob, Sage followed Alex down the entrance path and up the flight of stairs to her apartment. Number 32.
âThis is me.â Alex stalled. âJust so you know, my place isnât fancy. Itâs pretty simple. And I havenât yet had a chance to put up much artwork or decorations.â
âAlex. You donât have to apologize for anything. Iâm not here to judge you.â
After another momentâs hesitation, Alex opened the door. âOkay, come on in.â She slipped out of her sneakers without bothering to untie them.
After giving Sage a quick tour of her living space and directing her to the couch, she walked over to her open kitchen, separated from the living space by a bar counter.
âI donât have as vast a selection of teas as you do,â she turned back toward Sage, âbut I made sure to have a few on hand, and I bought some extra special chocolate.â
Sage felt her smile spread to her eyes. It was clear Alex liked to please.
âCan I bring you some tea and chocolate?â
âThat sounds great; Iâd love some.â Sage rested her chin on her forearms on the back of the couch, watching Alex move about, her smile never wavering.
Alex pulled two mugs from the cabinet. âAlso, do you mind if we use your Netflix account? Only so itâll be easier to keep track of the episodes since we started on yours.â
âI donât mind at all. I think I remember my password . . . Iâll give it a try. Itâs saved on my computer, so I havenât had to enter it in ages.â Sage performed a mental scan before bringing herself back to the moment at hand. âMind if I use your bathroom?â
âOh, of course, not at all. I should have asked if you needed it!â
Sage chortled. This was just like Alex. âDonât be silly. I donât expect you to anticipate my every need.â
Alex shrugged. âA good hostess would.â
Sage shook her head, not entirely sure if Alex was joking.
