CHAPTER ELEVEN

THE NEXT DAY seemed to pass at a rate best described as glacial, but she’d surprised herself with her reaction to having to once more speak in front of the crowd of doctors. While, when she awoke in the morning, she’d felt her usual queasiness, by the time she got to the hospital and entered the building, it had started to wane.

Seeing Francisco waiting for her didn’t hurt, either.

“Ah, here you are,” he said, that tiny smile playing around his lips, making her salivate for another taste of them. “How’re you feeling?”

“Good,” she replied as they walked together toward the lecture hall, and she sternly admonished herself to keep her mind on business. “How did your operation go last night?”

There had been a horrendous accident in the late afternoon, and the survivors had been brought to Paulista’s. Francisco had been in theater when she arrived to check on Enzo, and had texted at five thirty to say he was unfortunately unable to make their dinner date.

She’d been disappointed, but took it in stride. After all, how many times had she been in theater only to find out that what she thought would be a two-hour operation stretched on to five?

“The facial trauma was severe. So much so that she lost her eye. The orbital structure was shattered, and I spent most of the operation trying to retrieve as many bone splinters as were safely possible.”

Since her other eye socket is undamaged, it would be a perfect case for your techniques, but unfortunately I doubt she would be able to afford it.”

“Well, some of the companies are willing to do some pro bono work, or at a lesser cost, in the hopes of developing a relationship with a new hospital. Let me know, I’ll approach the Belgian firm.”

They’d discussed the injuries and future prospective operations and, before she’d known it, an assistant came to tell her it was time.

“Before you go,” Francisco said quietly as she got up to head for the stage. “Are we still on for tomorrow?”

“Sure,” she replied, trying not to let how much she was looking forward to it show.

And from that moment on, it felt as though the day ground almost to a halt. Never before had she been so impatient to finish giving a lecture, and less than completely focused. Getting through it felt sort of like a slog through mud, despite her love of the subject matter.

Then, before she could leave, the director cornered her, and invited her to lunch with him and the head of surgery. It wouldn’t be politic to decline, so off they went to a restaurant a few miles from the hospital, and had the longest lunch she could ever remember. Both
