chapter 14

On the Way to Chili’s

Franklin compared the traffic in the parking lot to rush hour in a metropolis. Wearing his patience, he swore that he would never shop at a mall again. Online shopping was the best thing that happened to society.

“Grampy, I’m so hungry.”

“I know Princess. We’re almost to the exit.” He pulled onto the roadway. “Finally, we’re out of there. What would you like to eat?”

“I want chili rellenos and enchiladas with refried beans and flour tortillas. Oh yes, guacamole too.”

That sounded fantastic, but Franklin would have added street tacos to that menu. “But that’s Mexican food. Princess, you’re hat is in your eyes, push it back.”

“Okay, but don’t you like Mexican?”

“Yes. I love Mexican food, but not in New England. ”

“So what does that mean?”

“We have excellent Italian food, but the best Mexican food around here is Taco Bell.”

She crinkled her nose. “Ew, that’s fake Mexican.”

“You don’t like Taco Bell? I thought all kids did.”

“It’s okay. But we don’t eat fast food. It’s not good for you. But why doesn’t New Hampshire have real Mexican food?”

“We have some Mexican restaurants here, but they’re not authentic.” Franklin maneuvered into the left turning lane. “It’s just a different culture.”

“What do you mean?”

“Different parts of the country have different cultures, different accents, and different food favorites. New Hampshire has great seafood and Italian food.”

“And good pizza.”

The left arrow turned green. The line of cars ahead of him moved ahead like a bunch of snails. Just as he reached the light, it turned red. That figures. “Bingo, I got an idea. Do you like Chili’s? At least it’s Tex-Mex.”

“I love Chili’s, and I love Tex-Mex. That’s the type of food we have in Okla.” She fell silent.

Franklin glanced at her. She froze with her mouth hung open.

“I get it now,” she proclaimed. Oklahoma specializes in Tex-Mex. New Hampshire specializes in Italian food.”

“Yes, exactly. But Chili’s is about twenty minutes from here. And with all this traffic, it could take a little longer than usual. It’s in Tilton.”

“I don’t care. I want a steak fajita quesadilla.”

“Are you sure you can wait?” The light turned green, and he turned onto the interstate.

“Yes, I can wait. If you take me there, you’d make me a very happy granddaughter.”

Watching traffic, he merged into the first lane and moved over into the middle lane. “Okay, young lady, Chili’s it is.”

“Can I get salsa and chips and guacamole too?”

“Absolutely, anything you want.”

“Yes!”

Traveling down the highway, she hummed and wiggled like she created her own musical composition.

Maggie blurted, “Claudia is like you. Her favorite color is red.”

“Who’s Claudia?”

“She’s my best friend?”

“Okay. That’s good to know. But what makes you think my favorite color is red?”

A smart car passed him, reentered in front of him, and hit the brakes, forcing Franklin to press his brakes. What an idiot! Why did you pass me?

“Hmm, how did I figure that out? Let’s see. You got a red truck, and you’re wearing a red sweater. You have a red jacket in the back seat.
