Chapter 21

* * *

Debris littered his room like the battlefield it had become. There was no way he could cover up the damage, not with the new sunroof letting the sky peek inside. The first of the two suns edged over the horizon. Darion was relieved to see it wasn’t eclipsed on this side of the portal.

Korbin let out a distressed sound, making Darion tense, the helplessness rushing back. He forced himself to look at the man. His eyes were locked on his bare chest and the scratches that marred it, still stinging like a bitch. Korbin scrambled backwards, lunging for the door.

Darion wanted to let him go. Having him out of sight was the only comfort he was likely to get. He sighed. “Sage, bring him back.”

Sage looked at him, her own longing making his nerves even rawer. Her eyes flashed angrily at Aubrey, but she turned to do his bidding.

He was surprised to see that the girl’s eyes were open, though dazed and filled with a similar exhaustion to what he was feeling. “Still with us?” he asked, reaching for his discarded shirt and pulling it over his head. He wished he had grabbed a new one instead. The ripped collar caused the neck to sag. He groped under the bed to where his other glove had fallen and dragged it on.

Aubrey sat up with an effort, her eyes widening as she reached for his face.

He jerked out of reach, and Aubrey dropped her hand. “You’re bleeding.”

Darion wiped his sleeve across his face, smearing blood. Korbin had gotten in a few lucky hits while he had been out of his mind, but the blood had already stopped leaking from Darion’s nose.

“Don’t look like that, I’m fine. This happens sometimes.” Her eyes darted to his, the uncertainty in them somehow making the swirling in his stomach worse. He tried a smirk but had the feeling it came out lopsided. “It’s hard when everyone wants me all the time.”

“If it makes you feel better,” Aubrey said, her voice shaking slightly, “I still hate your guts.”

Neil snorted, leaning back on his hands near the door.

The weight on Darion’s chest lightened. He angled his head toward Aubrey. “Take her to the dorms, Neil.”

“I’d prefer that she stay,” Maxwell said, stepping into the room. His eyes scanned the damage, one eyebrow drawing up. “An explanation is needed for what happened here.”

Sage hesitated in the doorway, her hand gripping Korbin’s arm.

Maxwell frowned at the man. “Counselor Korbin, what are you doing near Darion’s room? We’ve discussed this before.”

The counselor licked his dry lips. “You said that Darion’s behavior had become problematic. I thought—”

“He told me you sent him here,” Darion interrupted, fidgeting from the exposure his torn shirt caused.

Maxwell glared at the counselor. “Leave,” he ordered. When the counselor fled, he turned back to Darion. “Do you trust me so little?”

Darion shrugged. “He was here. It wasn’t the first time.”

“I’ll take care of it,” Maxwell said.

“You’ll take care of it?” Aubrey scrambled to her feet.
