He taps his forehead, taps it harder when he doesn’t feel anything. He lets out a dumb chuckle with the realization that he’s drunk. He takes a sip from his glass, the fire on his tongue and the bite on his throat forcing him to make all kinds of ridiculous faces and flinches. Jesus, how the hell does Grey drink so much of this? He plays with the brown alcohol in his glass, swirls it about, round and round.

“I’m cutting you off after that one, Len,” Ronnie says.

Lenny gives him a thumbs up. “You got it, Ron.”

A thin man with short brown hair sits down two stools from Lenny and orders a drink from Ronnie.

“Hugh!” Lenny shouts, swinging his arms up into the air.

Hugh turns and smiles once he sees him. “Hey, Len.”

“What’s up, man? How’d the mission go in Dock 5?”

Hugh looks up and sees the lobby bar is empty, no one but Ronnie there to hear about their secrets. “Oh, you know, pretty standard stuff.” Hugh pulls out a thickly packed manila folder and flops it onto the bar. “Now for the fun stuff…paperwork!”

Lenny chuckles, his shoulders lazily bumping up and down.

“Man,” Hugh says, “that is the one thing I’ll always envy about assassins. No paperwork for them!”

“Yeah, Joe babies them−” Lenny burps. “Pretty well.”

Hugh lets out a small laugh at Lenny’s drunken state. “Speaking of that, shouldn’t you be down in the Docks? I heard there’s a situation you guys are dealing with.”

“Oh, yeah, but I needed a break, man. I’ve been plugging away in that hot-ass room for almost two days now.”

“Damn. Sounds rough.” Hugh pulls out a black pen and begins writing down tedious post-mission notes.

“Yeah,” Lenny looks at the drink in his glass and decides not to take another sip. “So what’d do you in Dock 5? Value enhancing, stock prediction, sports gamble?”

“Stock prediction. Just went back and told some companies what stocks are doing well right now. Like I said, pretty standard day.”

Lenny nods his head. “Say, Hugh, I don’t think I’ve ever asked you−how’s a guy like you end up working here?”

Hugh smiles. “Got recruited, Len. Just like everyone else.”

“No, I know, but I mean…why’d you say yes?”

Lenny’s question stops Hugh in his tracks. He puts the pen down and takes off the thin framed glasses from his face. He swivels in his stool and faces Lenny. “Where to begin,” he sighs. “I had this tech company way back when, probably back when you were just a teenager. Anyway, I was this bright-eyed, naïve ass kid with a treasure in my hands. But I sold it for a million bucks when I was twenty-five. Now it’s worth hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Lenny winces. “Ouch.”

“Yeah. Funny part is, some of the foundational algorithms you guys use for tracking anomalies in the past are from my company.”

“Wow,” Lenny shakes his head. “That is incredible.”

“Yeah.” Hugh smiles and puts his glasses back on, swivels in the chair back towards the bar and picks up his pen.
