As we drove, my cell phone rang. I reached for it but Lauren snatched it up quickly, telling me, “You just drive. Hello.” There was a momentary pause before she continued, “Oh, hello, Ty.” She told him what we had found out and that we were on our way to Paddington Hills. Ty wasn’t saying much, as she was doing the bulk of the talking. Then finally she fell silent, giving him a chance to get a word in. Closing the phone and putting it back on the console, she informed us. Ty said that he and his family are doing fine and have gotten his father settled at his parents’ home. He’ll be home around six o’clock, in time for the four of us to go out to dinner.

“We’re not going out to dinner,” I told her. “Dinner’s already cooking in the crock pot. You even commented on the smell of it when you came in the house. And you call me unperceptive.”

“Bite me, Ryan.” Lauren turned to look out her side window.

I heard a low laugh from Eric in the backseat. “The way you two banter, you’re just like brother and sister.”

I glanced over at Lauren, and she turned back to me. We each sniffed audibly in feigned distain. “Sisters, Eric, there’s no brother here!” Lauren taunted.

Focusing again on my driving, I remembered the horseplay between Ty and Eric at the mall a few days ago. Their closeness rivaled Lauren’s and mine. Ty and Eric showed their affection by physically roughhousing, Lauren and I by verbally jousting. We’ve said some pretty hard things in jest to each other over the years. But because we know how much we care for each other, it’s water off a duck’s back.
