At eight the next morning, Isaac and I headed to my house. It had taken a good ten minutes to pry him away from Ciara, but I eventually won the battle by landing a kidney punch to his back. I’d expected Ciara to get upset with me, but she laughed instead.

“You guys remind me of Liam and I,” she said, shaking her head when Isaac snarled at me while rubbing his back.

Isaac and I looked at each other, and I bit my lip when his face scrunched up. “Haven’t you told her about us?” I taunted.

“Oh, I don’t mean your history,” she said, waving off my comment. “I mean how you are now. You quarrel like siblings. It’s cute.”

Isaac grumbled and huffed out a breath. “She’s a pain in my ass,” he said, staring at me.

I widened my eyes and placed a hand on my chest. “Why, Isaac, such harsh words. You wound me. But are you referring to me or your mate?”

“Hmmph. Both, I think.” He gave Ciara a hasty kiss and slid into my car. “I don’t know why we can’t take my truck. I feel like I’m in a clown’s car in this thing.”

“Hey, just because you’re grumpy doesn’t mean you can insult the Prius. She hasn’t done anything to you,” I said as I patted the dashboard. “She’s a good girl.” When he growled at me, I shared a smile with Ciara as I backed out of the driveway.

“Why’d you ask me to come with you?” Isaac asked after a few minutes of silence. “You could have made Fraser take you.”

“I need to talk to you.”

“Then talk.”

“Do you want to remain Alpha?” I asked it quickly before I chickened out.

He didn’t respond right away, and I let him think while I drove. “Yeah. I do.”

“Okay.”

He made a noise that was a cross between a snort and a grunt. “Okay? That’s it?”

“Yeah. I don’t want the position. You’re already in it. It makes it easier if you stay.”

“Then why even ask?”

“Ciara. She might not want to stay in Cullum County. You can’t be Alpha if you’re in Chicago with her.”

“She wants to stay. I’ve already asked her to move in with me, and she agreed. We’re going to tell Liam tonight.”

I chewed my lip for a minute. I hated to ask him to wait, but I needed to. “Uh, you may want to wait until after our meeting.”

“Meeting?”

“Yeah, we have a plan we need to go over. Liam’s not thrilled about it, so you may want to wait to tell him you’re going to live with his sister.”

“Fucking Fraser.”

We drove in silence the rest of the way. When we got to my house, we did a perimeter check then stepped inside to find everything the way it should be. He sat on the couch and replied to work emails while I packed a bag.

When I returned to the living room, he was still sitting in the same spot, staring out the back sliding doors.

I dropped my bag by the front door and plopped down next to him on the couch.
