According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), in 2010, the stock of foreign investment in Australia was equivalent to 39.9 percent of GDP, well above the world average of 30.4 percent, making Australia relatively reliant on foreign investment in international terms.35 It has been noted in Australia that foreign investment has driven strong economic growth, increased employment, and resulted in higher income levels than otherwise would have been realised and that on this basis greater foreign investment should be allowed.36
