Em lowered the book and looked at Ben who was sat in his chair on the terrace. His eyes were fixed on the horizon, where clouds were beginning to pile up. A storm was threatening.
âWhat do you think?â she asked Em.
There was no answer from Ben, nor did he look up.
âI must say,â said Susan, âI didnât understand most of what he wrote. Are they really all about suchâ¦things? Ben?â
Ben had covered his eyes with his fingers and remained silent.
âWell, I think he did a pretty good job of it,â said Em, brightly.
âWhen are you seeing him again?â Susan asked.
âIn a week or so. He wants me to meet his mother. She sounds quite sweet, really.â
Susan tried again. âBen?â She shook her head and indicated to Em they should leave him.
âI think he is really moved,â said Susan, when they were in the kitchen. âIâm not sure what he wrote, but I think he was impressed.â
âIt wasnât a wasted effort then?â Miranda asked.
âNo. Thank goodness. Heâs a good boy. Heâs a nice boy,â said Susan.
âMother!â
âWell, itâs what I think. I thought so the minute I saw him. Just you make sure you treat him right, young lady.â
âTreat him mean to keep him keen?â
âYou are a worry, to me,â said Susan, stacking plates.
Em laughed. âItâs fine. I like him. We get on.â
âGood, because I think you need someone like him.â
âThanks. I am actually quite fine, you know.â
âYes, yes, but you were drifting. Heâs a nice boy, Miranda.â
âMother! Itâs Em!â
Out on the terrace, Ben was still staring out to sea.
âHe dedicated it to you, Ben,â Miranda said, patting his shoulders.
âThat was kind of him.â
âHe likes you,â she said, and then waited a few moments before she said, âI think he saw you asâ¦â
Ben cut across her. âThatâs fine, Em. Thatâs fine. I donât think we need to discuss that.â
Em smiled to herself. âIâll be sure to bring him back next summer,â she said, and he nodded. âI think heâd like to come back to see you.â
Ben nodded. âGood. That would be good,â he said, and rested his head in his hands.
The September afternoon was still warm, but soon there would be storms - autumn storms â and the sea would be whipped up into a grey frenzy. Miranda would be gone, and Susan would have to bolt the doors to the terrace shut against the wind.
