A week passed, or what Miko thought a week. How every hour of those seven days snailed by like years, filling his mind with incompressible, cancerous pain. A terrible struggle ping-ponged between human and alien, one that was rapidly becoming a lopsided fight to a singular, unified form.

Miko tried to veer out on an escape vector, but every time he tried, or what was left of him tried, the spasm of Audra’s volition intruded upon his nerve centres. Constantly she dragged him back to a stasis; her will was more focussed than his—an incorrigible, slimy penetration.

Nor was Audra immune to Miko’s force. The added powers of his perception, multiplied with his own confidence and knowledge that two advanced races could coexist as one, had increased his potential to exceptional degree. His feelings were not unpleasant—far from it—intoxicating—if one were to forget the once-quasi-humanness he had guarded, or the lost, sterile alienity that lurked behind the mask of his own personality like some greedy amphibian.
