Chapter Seven

Najin stood in front of the wall-sized display, hands clasped behind his back. A real-time image made it seem as though he peered through the wall of his spacious office. In truth, the interrogation room was down the hall, and the display could show him any area of the massive military complex.

Earlier that morning, a team of his best investigators located the female programmer Kraigh Orris fired and brought her here for questioning. Her name was Perline Forrist, and she’d worked at HV-Tech for the past nine solar cycles. She insisted that Kraigh Orris kept his employees from benefiting from their own ideas and took credit for anything developed at HV-Tech regardless of his actual involvement. Few would argue with her assessment that Kraigh Orris was an arrogant, self-serving prick, but Najin was relatively sure what Perline described wasn’t illegal. If the tech was developed by HV-Tech employees during business hours, Kraigh Orris and his partners owned the technology.

As the questions became repetitive, Najin’s mind drifted back to the night before. Eltor’s schedule, and his stubbornness, kept him from spending the night with their intriguing new pet. Najin took full advantage of the opportunity. He swept Brianne into his arms as soon as he entered her suite then made slow, tender love to her as he’d longed to ever since the auction. As he moved deep inside her, their gazes locked, and he felt their souls touch for the first time. He’d heard the sensation described but never dreamed he would feel it with a human. Resisting the urge to anchor the soul-bond had been excruciating, but soul-bonds were permanent so it was illegal to form the connection without the other person’s consent.

Brianne seemed confused and somewhat dazed by the experience, but neither spoke of what happened as they lay in each other’s arms afterward. First and foremost, Najin had to convince Eltor not to give Brianne to Moxtel. Najin didn’t want to start a war with the Yashonty, but he would do whatever it took to keep his soulmate safe.

Najin shook away the disconcerting thoughts and was preparing to tell the investigators to turn Perline loose when she scooted forward and rested her forearms on the table.

“It’s obvious you haven’t believed anything I’ve told you so far,” the programmer said, “but I’m a loyal Rylarian, so I need to try.” She was small for a Rylarian female, and her skin was dusky blue rather than gray. Her strange greenish-blue eyes were another indicator that she was a hybrid.

“We don’t doubt what you’ve told us,” Hezrand, the female investigator insisted. “Unfortunately, nothing you’ve described is against the law.”

“That doesn’t make it right,” Perline snapped.

“What were you going to tell us?” the male investigator prompted.

Their voices were muffled, so Najin increased the audio level of the surveillance. Hezrand was his best investigator. Her partner was new, so Najin didn’t know much about him. Most investigators were contract workers, which meant they had more operational latitude than soldiers.

“HV-Tech took on a new client a couple of cycles ago, one they are working incredibly hard to hide.
