I had no idea how long it took me to swim across the lake. Hours. Endless hours. With no way to judge the passage of time, I estimated I needed at least thirty minutes—if not twice that—to make it out of the side arm of the lake and into the main part. There, I rested a while in the shallow waters on the opposite shore of the side arm to catch my breath and try to regain some strength—to no avail. The ice-cold water had by now numbed my fingers and toes well above my wrists and ankles, but I figured as long as I could still swim, sensation would return later if I didn’t drown or get eaten. The numbing sensation had spread all across my skin by then, making it impossible to feel the sting of the scratches and bites, but I hadn’t forgotten about them.

The way I saw it, I had two options. Either to climb out here and backtrack to the fire station, which was a stupid idea because I had no clue who was lurking in the dark, dead and alive. Or, to swim across the lake and hide in one of the houses we’d stayed in and raided ourselves, where I still remembered the lay of the land, and where very few zombies had been hiding all summer long. Much could have changed about that, of course, but I doubted they’d managed to get into the houses we’d carefully barricaded from the inside and later climbed out of through less obvious doors and windows.

Yes, we had been paranoid fucks, but now I felt like said precaution had absolutely been warranted.

Even if I hated staying hours longer in the water, it was safer to go the direct route than to try to cross via the bridge that might just have been part of the ambush that had almost cost me my life—and maybe the guys hadn’t been that lucky.

I didn’t really think much as I slowly made my way across the lake, near silent except for when I had to tread water, trying to warm up my frozen muscles to keep going. It wasn’t even that long, although all in all, I had twice the distance to go as we’d paddled across many times during the summer in our kayaks because of where I’d jumped into the water. But I was weak, tired, cold, and utterly miserable, and none of that made for great thinking.

Besides the cold, there was only hunger on my mind, which didn’t help.

When I finally reached the desired shore, it had started to rain—because I wasn’t miserable enough yet.

I didn’t bother with one of the few piers reaching into the lake. By then, I neither possessed the strength in my arms and torso to heave myself up out of the water, nor would have been able to perform the fine mechanical manipulations of my digits to wrap them around a ladder rung.
