DECK CREW

According to the Decree of Themistokles, which records the measures taken by the Athenian assembly (ekklēsía) in 481 BC to meet the threatened Persian invasion, the fighting men of an Athenian trireme included hoplites (hoplítai), enlisted as ‘deck-soldiers (epibátai), ten for each ship, from men over 20 years of age up to 30, and archers (toxótai), four in number’ (Fornara. 25–26). This practice appears to have continued throughout the 5th century BC (Thuc. 2.23.2, 3.94.1, 3.95.2, cf. 2.56.2, Plut. Them 14.2), although 4th-century BC crew-lists often give only two or three archers. One trireme, for example, had 11 epibátai and three toxótai (IG 22 1951.82–84).
