AYB PLAYBOOKS & RECOMMENDED READING
Starting and running a successful small business can be extremely difficult—and, even that may be an understatement. Every day across the US, countless small businesses die painful deaths and their owners suffer the financial and emotional consequences. However, working together, we are going to make sure that this does not happen to You, Inc.
The reasons for small business failures usually come down to some predictable, critical success factors that were missed. These critical success factors can be categorized as follows:
Consistent Delivery of High Quality Service
Focus on Customer Service and Loyalty
Financial and Cashflow Management
Effectiveness of Business Operation and Processes
Success in Sales and Marketing
Small Team Leadership
Failing at any one of these critical success factors does not guarantee failure of You, Inc. However, each of these factors, in and of themselves can kill your business. If a small business is not executing on two or more of these factors at the same time, the odds of going out of business grows exponentially until the weight of the issues kill the business—but not You, Inc., because you will be forewarned and prepared.
If the quality of You, Inc.’s services is inconsistent, your reputation will suffer
If You, Inc.’s customer service is lacking, and your customers are not loyal, you will not see repeat business
If You, Inc.’s financials are not kept in order, you will run into money problems—guaranteed
If You, Inc.’s paperwork and other back-office operations are not organized, you will be frustrated at best or, at worst, you will run into serious legal, financial and/or tax problems
If You, Inc.’s efforts to generate business for itself is passive or substandard, you will only see little or no revenue growth
If You, Inc.’s team is limited by your ability to lead, you will also limit your overall growth and your ability to attract other high-quality craftsmen
The overarching objective of this AYB Playbook is to give you a “look beyond the horizon” to arm you with the right questions to ask and the right issues to think about as you build You, Inc. Given that you are now considering striking out on your own, you are going to have to learn and master an entirely new set of skills to meet the challenge of these “predictable, critical success factors.”
Part 3 of this AYB Playbook will discuss these “critical success factors” at a high level to cover what you need to consider. In order to get a more in depth understanding of these topics, you will be directed to five books that present their position on those topics in much more detail. There is no doubt that there are any number of books and resources that you can use to learn more about any business subject that you can imagine. I strongly encourage you to do so.
However, in an effort to give you a starting point, as well as to narrow the scope of what you need to read on a particular subject, I will suggest specific sections or chapters in one or more of five books covering five main focus areas.
