28: Godspeed, Dear Pegasus

In January, four months shy of his 31st birthday, Dancer's spirit entered the white light on its flight home to The Maker.

In March, a new endurance rider asked to ride with me. We met, I in my car and she in her truck, trailer in tow, in a department store parking lot. As I led the way up the interstate to Highlander's stable, vehicles streamed past us and an old-fashioned white delivery truck cut into the slow lane in front of me. Time stood still when I noticed the black painting on its back. As soon as "The Pegasus Company" and a circle around a winged horse registered in my brain, the truck pulled back into the passing lane and disappeared into faster traffic.

Had Dancer sent me a message? Did the logo's circle intimate a new link in an ever-growing chain (the delivery truck = Dancer, my car = me, and the rig behind me = a newbie to distance riding)? Did the highway symbolize the progression of life -- that it's time for me to pass on what I've learned about the trails and the sport?

Was the long distance champ who, I think, had communicated long distance to me twice when he was alive, now saying that, after having granted me time to grieve, he needed to move on? All know for sure is that I finally felt at peace.

On July 9th, Marshall, co-owner of the stable, and I planted a redbud sapling -- the purple-leaved variety -- on Dancer's grave. Valentines dancing in the breeze seemed a fitting marker for the horse who'd always set my heart aflutter.
