Chapter 17

Adison was in Sunrise for over two years, and the only results and/or conclusions she was seeing were on the cases she worked for SPD. She had to constantly remind herself that she was here for SID to gather information and not to solve anything. She was comfortably ensconced in the town’s life and had only her weekly status reports to Harper to forward to SID

to remind her that she was more than a detective for a community.

Monday morning, back from her three-day weekend at her cabin, she followed her ritual of checking her apartment for unwanted entry while she was gone, then powered on her PC.

While it booted up, she took a shower to wash her hair and dress for street work. Her pager had been vibrating since she turned it on as she passed the Sunrise town markers, so she was expecting to be out of the office most of the day, taking reports on crimes or doing follow-ups after seven that morning when Mark went off duty.

With her cup of steaming coffee sitting on the small table near her reading chair, Adison watched the logon process to the SecureID

server,

the

PD

server.

Absentmindedly, she towel dried her hair as the PD server, more ponderous about remote access, ran through its steps to get her into her files. Her thoughts were on her three days off.

Doggone, Mel. You’re right. If I didn’t have some place of my own to retreat to, I think I would have had a meltdown by now. This is the last time I take on a long term project.

The thought had her sitting up straighter on the metal folding chair. If she had not been on assignment for this long, she wouldn’t have formed the relationships she had now, and 245

frankly, she really liked the people of Sunrise and Sam Bear, too.

Oh, bother. If Mel doesn’t tie this one up soon, I’m going to be so embedded in this community I’m going to not want to be unearthed.

A message popped up on her screen, bringing her attention back to the present.

“Speaking of the devil,” she muttered.

Alex leaned over and quickly punched in SID’s phone number.

“Mel, got your message. What’s going on?” she asked. Her heart was beating in anticipation. He was calling her direct and not going through Harper. “No, I haven’t yet….He did…you did?” Adison let out a low whistle as Mel informed her that SID’s plan had just moved into high gear. It was a little unnerving since that was just what she was thinking about. “So what’s the plan?…Baiting? Who’s the bait?” she asked suspiciously. “A civilian?”

She detested using civilians in her assignments. Not because she worried about their safety, but because civilians involved with gangs typically were as dirty if not more so than the gang member the Feds were attempting to arrest. Usually, it turned out that the bait was just exchanging prison time for helping out. They were still dirty and therefore unpredictable when things got hot.

“When is she due in?…Today at the shelter?” Her eyebrows lifted in surprise.
