Standing on the edge of the tree line, Pekka glanced down at the corpse of the slain Soviet at his feet, Poor bastard never even had a chance. He thought as he turned toward his men, pointed his PPD 34 skyward with his right hand, then turned toward the Soviet supply depot as he lowered the gun and pointed the barrel toward the depot while yelling, “Attack!”

The Finns let out a cacophony of fearsome shouts as they charged forward following their commander into the sea of Soviet tents. The men flowed around Pekka and split into two groups. The first, led by Sergeant Kivi barreled straight ahead, the heavy weight of the Maxim M1910 Heavy Machine Gun secure in his beefy arms. Leo led the second group. His group’s mission was to control the flanks behind Sergeant Kivi’s group as they advanced.

As the shocked enemy began to stumble from the tents in bleary eyed confusion, Sergeant Kivi aimed the Maxim Heavy Machine Gun he bore in his stout arms and squeezed off short bursts into each of the surprised Soviets, cutting them down before they realized the danger. The Sergeant carried the machine gun in his right arm with the stock braced against his right hip. Wrapped around his left arm was the belt of bullets that fed the hungry beast as death spewed forth from its maw.

Sergeant Kivi’s men followed quickly on his heels. They joined in the mayhem by gunning down any targets that their leader missed as they penetrated deeper into the camp. In contrast, Leo’s men slowly fanned out behind the advancing group, forming a perimeter behind the attackers, which prevented the enemy from getting behind Sergeant Kivi’s attack group. This prevented the attack group from becoming surrounded on all sides by the enemy.

Pekka calmly strode up the middle of the space secured by the two groups. As he advanced, he heard the sound of canvas rustling behind him. Whirling around, he was shocked to see the barrel of a PPD 34 pointed at his forehead. The newly promoted Lieutenant slowly raised his arms, smiled at the enemy soldier and said, “I surrender.”

As Pekka looked into the man’s eyes he saw a hardness. The man’s body tensed, He’s going to shoot. Pekka thought a moment before the Russian’s head exploded into a red mist.

Up on the hill, Hale operated the bolt on his rifle as he thought, You need to be more careful, my friend.

Turning to other targets, he saw that the guards in the newly built towers situated on the four corners of the depot, were busy taking aim at the attacking Finns, “Help me kill the tower guards before they shoot one of our men.” Hale ordered.

Not waiting to see if his three charges obeyed him, Hale took a deep breath and held it as he focused on a guard that was taking aim at Sergeant Kivi’s bellowing form. Hale lined up the two iron sights on his Mosin Nagant, until the enemy’s head, which was a small dot at this distance aligned with the two sights on his rifle.
