In the highly unlikely and improbable event they blasted a hole through the ceiling and jumped down, Bharjkhan knew there were only three ways into the underground complex, all of which were covered. Judging the thundering herds and muted waves of shouts and weapons fire above, he doubted the commandos had either time or inclination to break through from above. And, now, without the explosives at their command…

Were they doomed? Was the glorious dream of personal jihad, bringing the hotel down, about to die before its fruition?

And did he have manpower enough to tackle his own corridor? Bharjkhan wondered, two of his warriors racing to the far security and utility complex doors, assault rifles up and ready to shoot when the barriers came down, as he was positive they would. Even before he ran through the count of shooters he already knew he was short. Two warriors in the elevator, then six watching the north side hall. The security room under guard by another six, ready to execute all hostages…

He then heard the muffled peals of explosions and stammering bursts of autofire from beyond the locked door to the utility vault.

They were coming.

Silently, as he snugged the female shield closer to his chest, he cursed the detonation box, then offered a short feverish prayer, his burning thoughts imploring the will of God to show him the light. Then he suddenly remembered he had brought the remote unit to light up the C and C hole, instead of leaving it where it would do the most good, thus compounding potential disaster. He cursed himself viciously for what may prove to be a damning oversight, wondered if fear of failure was so working on his nerves he couldn’t think straight. As if it mattered anyway, given the enemy had jammed their radio signals.

His assault rifle aimed one-handed down the hall, Bharjkhan was looking over the heads of the five hostages on their knees before him, hissing in the woman’s ear to be quiet, when what looked to be the door to the utility lair was blown off its hinges, a mangled airborne missile that bowled down one of his men at the knees.

The enemy showed its hand a microsecond later, as the security door toppled into the corridor and muzzle-flashes began strobing through the boiling smoke. Dark figures appeared scrunched to either side of the jamb, subguns cutting down his two-man vanguard, blowing one off his feet, pinning the other to the floor in a splash of blood and tattered cloth. One of his warriors had the quick inspiration to trigger his RPG-7, but Bharjkhan glimpsed it sailing off-line suddenly, the rocket man tumbling as fingers of blood jetted from his chest. Then the blast drove spikes into his eardrums, the racket cleaving his brain, as he fell back, hauling the woman with him, fairly certain the warhead had impacted against the ceiling. True enough, judging the renewed fury of enemy fire, all the blast did was hurl yet more roiling smoke and dust to obscure the commandos.
