CHAPTER

SWAT team sniper Amil Shundra watched from his building top post as the small spacecraft settled to the ground in the Mall in Washington. He smiled to himself. Thinking of this as a ‘small’ spacecraft would never have occurred to him a few weeks ago. Now, after having seen the Askarjan assault craft and the full sized Council of Planets assault craft, the twenty-foot diameter icosahedron shaped ship looked puny. It also looked kind of silly. The five long, slender, multiple jointed legs it was sitting down on made it look much like a high school textbook diagram of a virus. At least any threat of invasion could be dismissed. He doubted a ship that size could hold more than forty or fifty troops, and even that many would be uncomfortably crowded. It wasn’t the kind of ship you’d expect anyone to use to land an invasion force. He was about to share his observation with Officer Elkanah, his spotter, who he knew was concerned about the alien’s motives. It was the last thought he would ever have.

Cecil Elkanah stood over the body of his ex-partner, the silenced .22 auto-loading pistol in his hands. Just to be sure, he put two more rounds into the back of Shundra’s head. He glanced behind himself as Father Archelaus and six of their companions came out of the stairwell and on to the roof.

As Elkanah picked up Shundra’s rifle, the Priest supervised the setting up of the rocket launcher and the mortar. As they worked, the Priest reviewed the final instructions for the first step in their crusade.

“Once the demons come out of their craft, Cecil, you’ll pick the one who seems to be the leader and kill him. Once he’s down, if you can, kill Chui. Not only is he an atheist, which alone is reason enough to execute him, he’s obviously in league with the demons, which makes him at least as dangerous to mankind as they are.

“As soon as you fire your first shot, the rocket will be launched at the demon’s vessel. We only have one, so it must hit its target. The mortar will open fire at the same time. I realize it’s not the most accurate of weapons, but we should have time to fire four or five shots from it. With the Lord’s blessing, at least one of them will hit the demon ship if the rocket misses. Some of the people around the ship will doubtlessly be killed and injured, but their willingness to deal with Satan’s forces places any harm they come to squarely on their own shoulders.

“When I give the word, we leave everything here and run. It won’t take them long to figure out where the shots came from. They’ll be after us when they do. With a little of God’s help we’ll escape, but even if we don’t, we will have struck an important blow for the salvation of mankind. Our actions against this one group of Satan’s army won’t stop
