Just in case you are wondering … Yes, when I was in elementary school, they had us write down what we wanted to be when we grew up. Most boys wrote things like doctor, fireman, or policeman. I wrote down lawyer. I am not sure if I knew what a lawyer was back then, but I knew that I didn’t like not knowing my rights. For kids growing up in the projects, police can be a good or a bad thing. I remember feeling powerless as a kid when police were in my house. I became a lawyer, not with the idealistic or naïve view of changing the world, but simply to have the education first for myself. Twenty-odd years after writing down what I wanted to be, my reasons stayed the same. It was to build value in me and what I knew. Everything else would fall into place.
