CHAPTER 4

ELENA

Days later I'm still dream-walking. I'm absent-minded. I can't get enough of the way he makes me feel when I'm with him.

It's not until our fourth date that he lets me live up to my offer. I have him over and make a caprese salad and stuffed eggplant.

Now we're here, in my little kitchen, and seeing him in among these familiar surroundings - my little space that's always been an oasis from the outside world - it makes me really get that he's for real. He's here, and I can either stay in my shell or I can let him in.

I'm slowly coming around to the idea that he's not going to just disappear. He likes being around me. He tells me so, and I'm learning to see it for myself, anyways. It's in the way he talks with me, the way he looks at me. I really, really like the way he looks at me, sometimes.

I'm not good at reading people, but something tells me you can't read Asher the way you read normal people. I take him as his own case. I'm beginning to learn him, bit by bit, and it's the most rewarding puzzle I could ever hope for. I love adding each piece. Each piece feels like it brings him a little closer.

"What are you thinking?" I ask.

He puts down his glass next to his empty plate off to the side. "I'm just wondering how I never knew about you all this time."

"Why would you know about me? I don't exactly keep a high profile."

"I guess that's true. Still, it's strange. Living in this little town, you'd think we'd know everybody. And then I just stumble across this one day. You. I never even knew a woman could affect me the way you do."

"Really? How do I affect you?"

He cocks his head. "You make me want to try new things. And you make me second-guess a lot of things I thought I knew."

"That's a good thing?"

He moves around the table, coming to lean beside me, his fingers absently trailing across my arm. He's been touching me more, and I honestly can't get enough of it. "It's a very good thing," he assures me.

"You make me want new things, too."

"It seems like tonight might be a night for new things," he observes. He's watching me closely. Desire is in his eyes, and the sight of it sends a thrill up my spine I never would have expected. There's an intensity in his face that he hasn't let show until now. "I want you, Elena. I've been patient, and I can be patient longer than this, if you need me to be. But I want you, and I'm not going to stop wanting you."

My mouth is dry as I try to swallow. I nod. I try to think of something to say. I don't even remember how we leave the kitchen.

In my bedroom, the effect of familiarity and strangeness is redoubled. Just him being here is exciting in a way I never would have expected.
