Chapter 8

I AWOKE THE NEXT MORNING to the sound of soft alarm chimes waking me and the other students. I laid there for a long moment, taking in the moment. For the first time since being in this realm, I haven't had a nightmare. Whether it was the wards protecting me or me finally feeling safe, I didn't know, but I was grateful for the uninterrupted sleep.

The bed shook, the chime becoming louder, more insistent.

"You better get up," Chiana said, standing in front of her wardrobe and watching me with an amused look on her face. "The beds will toss you off if you ignore the warning chime for too long."

"Oh," I said, hastily rising to my feet. I stumbled to the bathroom, then got dressed. I glanced toward the showers, where several girls were already in the midst of washing themselves, but decided against it. I really don't feel like going through that on my first day of class. The other students would have enough reasons to laugh at me in class. I didn't feel like giving them more fodder.

"How are you?" Brynja asked from behind after I'd donned my uniform and cloak.

"I'm doing well," I said, turning and returning the smile she had on her face. "Best night of sleep I've had in...a while."

She arched an eyebrow. "Really? I thought for sure the accommodations would pale compared to those at Radiant Manor."

"It's not always the softness of the mattress that makes a place comfortable," I said. "At least for me." Hell, Radiant manor is far more comfortable than back home, yet I'd give anything to return to Earth. "What class do you have first today," I asked, trying to change the subject. "I have Introduction to Magic."

"I have History of the Ascended Realm first," Brynja replied. "But we can have breakfast together, can't we?"

"Of course," I said, smiling. I scanned the room and found Chiana sitting on her bed, dressed but studying her schedule. "Do you mind if Chiana sits with us as well?"

Brynja maintained her smile. "Of course I don't mind."

"You go on ahead, I'll be down in a minute," I said. I waited until the other girl had left, then walked over to Chiana's bed.

"Hello," I said, giving a slight wave to get her attention.

The shaman-in-training looked up at me and smiled. "Greetings."

"Are you coming down to breakfast?" I asked.

"Of course, I'm starving."

"Do you want to sit with me...and Brynja?" I winced, inwardly, as I said it, expecting a strong response from the girl.

She froze for a long moment, staring at me, smile fading. At last her smile widened and she nodded. "Yes, I'll join you both. It's time to put our differences behind us."

"Great," I said. "Shall we go now?" I offered a hand to help her stand.

She ignored my hand, leaping to her feet and tucking the book under her arm. "Lead the way."

I laughed at that. As if I knew the way this early into my time at Starhold Academy. "If you insist," I said in an amused tone, sketching a slight bow before leading her out of the room.
