Chapter Sixteen

Gwen

We pulled up at the diner, and I hopped out, my heart pounding. The guys hadn’t kidnapped us, so that was a start. I gestured for Finn and Smith to hurry. Together, we barely managed to get Zeke out of the truck and not drop him. Then we staggered into the diner, Zeke supported between us.

The woman behind the counter rushed out, wiping her hands on her checkered apron. “Oh, my word,” she said. “What happened here?”

“Do you have a phone?” I asked, glancing back at the door. Zeke should have come around by now. I didn’t know how long Huginn could entertain those assholes before they got impatient. I couldn’t imagine what would happen then, but I didn’t think it would be anything good.

“Why, sure I do,” the woman said. She clutched a pen in one hand and an order pad in the other, as if she expected me to order chicken strips right now.

Impatience clawed at me, and I had to keep myself from snapping. “Can we borrow the phone?”

“You sure can.” The woman seemed to come out of her daze. She rushed behind the counter and hoisted a black vinyl purse with gold studs onto a stool. After digging for a second, she handed me a phone.

I turned to Finn. “What’s Neil’s number?”

Finn recited the numbers while I punched them in, praying he’d pick up. Of course, he was a super rich business man who probably didn’t want people calling him, so why would he answer a stranger’s call?

Pick up, pick up…

“Hello?”

“Neil,” I said. “We need help.”

“Who is this?” he asked, his voice edged with suspicion.

“It’s Gwen.”

“Gwen? You’re with your mother?”

“No,” I said, my voice coming out sharper than I meant.

“You’re calling from the same area code as Cedar Crest.”

My chest burned with anger, but I didn’t have time to accuse him of locking up my mom. I would take better care of his son than he’d taken of her. “We need help.”

“What happened? Are you okay?”

I glanced at the waitress and edged toward the side of the diner, turning my back and lowering my voice. “No, we’re not okay,” I hissed. “Zeke’s hurt, Finn can’t be left alone because he might commit suicide, and I brought back a dwarf with a fashion sense that’s caught the eye of some homophobes who seem really interested in when we leave this diner. Not to mention you put my mother in a loony bin. We need a hospital, money, a car…” I started hyperventilating, casting a quick glance over my shoulder.

The waitress gave me a wary but encouraging smile, like she hoped I wasn’t about to lose it and was rethinking her generosity with the phone.

Neil didn’t speak for a long minute. I could hear the clicking of a computer’s keyboard on his end. Then he spoke in a hurried but businesslike tone. “An Uber will be there in five minutes. They’ll take you to the clinic at Cedar Crest. They can help Zeke. Your mother has money. I’ll be there in an hour.
