Chapter Twenty-Four

“DID YOU HEAR me?” Taylor’s voice brought Joey back to reality. “I said what the hell is this?”

The ring in Joey’s pocket suddenly felt like it weighed twenty pounds. Whatever was about to happen, it was certainly not a proposal.

“That’s my outline,” Joey said. “For the book I’m writing.”

“Yes, I managed to put that together,” Taylor said, flipping through the pages. “But what’s all this about the main character leaving her girlfriend to go back to the love of her life?”

“It’s fiction.” Joey knew how flimsy the defense was even as she said it.

“It doesn’t seem that way to me.” Taylor threw the papers across the room. “It feels like you writing about using me as an experiment to see if you’re actually bisexual before going off to start your life with Dan.”

“But that’s just one of her options,” Joey said. “Did you keep reading?”

“Oh, you mean the part where the girlfriend meets someone else, so it’s all okay?”

She’d forgotten about that part. Ouch, how could she have written that down? Especially now, when the thought of Taylor with someone else felt like just about the worst thing that could happen?

“Yes, I wrote that. But that was before—”

“Before you realized Dan doesn’t love you anymore?” Tears streamed down Taylor’s face. “I can’t believe I’ve spent this whole year thinking we had moved past all that, only to find you think of me as nothing more than a placeholder.”

“You’re not a placeholder. And this has nothing to do with Dan. Look—” She fumbled in her pocket and pulled out the ring. “I was actually planning to propose before we go home.”

Taylor looked at the ring, then back at Joey, her eyes softening slightly after a couple of stares at each.

“We’re nineteen,” was all she said.

“Well, yeah, but…” Joey began.

“Joey, we’re nineteen years old. Why on earth would you propose to me?”

Joey closed the ring box and set it down on the desk, playing for time. How was Taylor simultaneously mad at her for possibly still having feelings for Dan, but also pissed that she wanted to marry her?

“Because I love you and I want to be with you?”

Taylor raised her eyebrows, putting one hand on her hip.

“Because I love you and I want to be with you,” Joey said again, this time taking the question out of it. “I’ve had a lot of time to think about this and it doesn’t matter what I wrote on that paper. I choose you.”

“Joey,” Taylor said, relaxing her posture. “I’m not a choice you get to make right now.”

She sat down on the bed and gestured for Joey to join her. Instead, Joey pulled the chair out from her desk and faced her. It felt like a face-to-face moment.

“I think you put too much pressure on us, right from the start,” Taylor began. “I know you love me, but I’ve wondered since the minute you ran away from graduation if maybe you don’t just love the idea of me. I’m not all women, I’m just me.
