It’s been weeks since Alora and I last spoke. I don’t know what I expected of that night. A relationship, maybe? I thought I’d be able to change her views on the matter. But I don’t think there’s a way to change very much about her. She’s set in her ways.

I tried not to ask about her whenever I hung out with Kelvin and Annie. I tried to keep things casual and ask about her schooling and if her exams were done. They didn’t seem suspicious of my prying, but fuck, did I ever want to just call her up and ask her myself.

She’s been quiet on her social media, quiet among her friends, too.

She’s frazzled when she’s in her head. Calm and collected when she breaks her walls down. It astounds and intrigues me how this woman is able to keep it together so well. But even the toughest people break down every once in a while, and I witnessed her most recent one. I fell asleep on the floor outside her door and had a kink in my shoulder for six days because of it. But I’d do it again in a heartbeat.

I’ve tried to text her twice, but I never brought myself to hit send.

I know nothing will come of this and I’m already in over my head, but this connection we have when we’re together is electrifying. I know she feels it, too. No matter how much she denies it.

We’re leaving today on a private jet to Vancouver. I hate flying, hate it more when I’m sober. But Coach won’t let us take anything before the game tomorrow night.

I wonder if Alora will come today.

Kelvin nudges me as I scroll through my Instagram account, unfollowing random chicks I used to fool around with. They’re not like Alora; no one is as appealing as she is. Woman has me swooning but wants nothing to do with me. Am I coming off as too desperate? “Hey, you good?”

I lock my phone and frown, sliding it into my pocket. “Yeah? Why wouldn’t I be?”

“You’ve seemed distracted the last few weeks. Even at practice. You never let Marshall get by, and he did. Twice.” Kelvin grabs my shoulder and brings me closer. “Is it because it’s almost your mom’s birthday?”

I can’t very well tell him it’s about Alora, he’d have my head on a platter. So, I shrug, swallowing hard. “Yeah, kinda.”

“We’re all here for you, man, you know that,” he says, opening his mouth to speak but stops as soon as Annie, Sophia, and Alora come strutting down the runway.

We’ve been waiting for Annie and Sophia to arrive. They were stuck in traffic on their way here. The team had an early morning meeting to go over plays, and the girls were to meet us later. Just not an hour later.

It’s impossible to hide my smile, and Alora notices, flashing me a smile, too. I guess things are good with us. We’re okay. Maybe we can be friends again. Please, let us be friends again.
