“So then she hops on the stage and tries to confront me, but I’m not about to stop dancing, and our next song involves some high kicks. So, as luck would have it, just as she gets closer, the kicks start. She goes flying off of the stage, right into the cake, where they apparently had a stripper waiting. There’s icing everywhere, and the owners come running out, screaming at everyone. She eventually gets escorted out. The poor stripper got knocked out in the process, so the guys, of course, go to her rescue. And meanwhile… I finish my number flawlessly. The drunk groom is oblivious to all of it, including his future wife being there to begin with, because he stands up, goofy grin on his face, clapping like a madman,” Hollis says, sending me into another fit of giggles. We were already an entire pitcher of margaritas in, and I was feeling great. Nothing like bringing a grown man to his knees and some booze to improve an evening.

“I promise not to burst in on your bachelor party in a fit of anger,” Drey told the guys, her voice solemn until she hiccuped and started laughing, setting us off again too.

“Are they always like this?” Remi asked Jack, his voice a mix of amusement and skepticism.

“No, we’re usually much worse,” Bailey teased. The girls broke into cheers as Spencer walked in, his face set in a grim line. He was in street clothes, which meant he was off duty, but the sight of him still sobered me a little.

“Any more news?” Vance asked in lieu of a greeting. Spencer shook his head and sighed as he took an empty chair.

“Captain’s holding him for twenty-four hours, but he thinks your dad will post bail,” he explained, “so if you want to press charges, you’ll need to go down to the station tomorrow.”

“I don’t,” I said firmly, shaking my head. “I just want him to go away.”

“Are you sure, princess?” Vance asked, his frown taking over as he looked at me. I nodded, and from the tic in his jaw, he didn’t agree, but he didn’t argue. Though I doubt this is really over.

“Beckett! Carter!” Hollis cheered, breaking the tension as our friends walked in, the former still in uniform. Beckett gave her a wink, their bond on a whole different level than ours, before turning to me with concern in his eyes. Carter took the seat next to her, and she pulled him into a hug of his own. They had always been close friends, and their place was her go to crash pad. As she reached for her drink again, I knew that’s where she’d end up tonight, too.

“Alright, Lanie?” Beckett asked, smiling when I nodded. He took his seat and gave a slight chuckle. “You did a number on him. Good work.” Pride flooded me, and I thanked Mom again for teaching me how to protect myself. They might have claimed he just wanted to talk, but he never should have approached me like that, regardless of who he was.
