The retreat continued into Belgium. German military police at the border inspected anyone who wanted to cross. Only units with permits were allowed to pass. The remains of the units were directed toward their assembly areas in Brussels, Leuven, and Diest in the Limburg lowlands. That was initially the end of our French odyssey. The Tigerabteilung assembled its units there. The vehicle supply unit in Brussels was able to provide us fairly well with vehicles.

We moved farther to Maastricht, rolled through the Westwall (German fortification line at the western border) where we saw the brown uniforms of the Volkssturm (militia), our last resort, for the first time. These poorly equipped soldiers would not be able to resist the pressure of the best-equipped enemy assault armies. We passed through Aachen, Düren, to Cologne. Next to our route of withdrawal, women and girls dug trenches and foxholes to provide cover against aircraft attacks. What good was that supposed to do? We reached Paderborn where the following weeks were filled with training replacements who were to fill the gaps in our ranks caused by the fighting in Normandy. We received the new Königstiger (King Tiger) and knew that our days were numbered!
