An Iraqi soldier on the Khorramshahr Front in 1980 takes cover with his Tabuk assault rifle at the ready. The Tabuk was a very basic weapon, without the muzzle compensator of the Soviet AKM and without the chrome-lined bore that helped prevent barrel wear. The maximum effective range of the weapon over iron sights was about 300m. This photograph shows the classic Iraqi Army khaki uniform, plus double-buckle combat boots of a design stretching back to World War II.
