DATING

The uncertainty of “is this really a date?” barely exists in Armenia. It is highly unusual for young people to be just friends with the opposite sex, so if you invite someone (or are invited) just for a drink, it does indeed count as a date. At the very least, it is a strong indication that the other person is interested in you romantically. Also be warned that if you are a Western foreigner, you will be seen as more sexually available than a native Armenian. It is possible that “a beer is just a beer,” but it may also be perceived as a prelude to something more.

When it comes to family, your Armenian dating partner will probably not take you home to meet the parents unless it is a very serious relationship. While there is plenty of dating that goes on without parents knowing about it, the older generation tends to believe you should only date the person you are going to marry, so casual partnering would be completely perplexing to—or even forbidden by—many parents. Casual dating in rural Armenia is almost unheard of unless marriage is the clear end. However, even in Yerevan, dating someone for longer than a year or eighteen months without marrying or at the very least getting engaged is also highly unusual.
