Back at the house, Alexandra was talking with a man in the barnyard. Toby recognized Colonel Claibourne.

"When I heard there had been shooting here," Claibourne said as Toby approached, "I thought Id better ride right over. I had no doubt as to who would win, though, Mr. Holt."

"I appreciate your concern, Colonel," Toby replied. "It did turn out well, thanks to the help we had."

"And you have more of the same available, simply for the asking," the colonel offered. "I can muster twenty to thirty Fairfield Hunt men upon a few hours' notice. If there's any way at all in which we can help, you need only say the word."

Toby thanked the tall, white-haired man for the offer but declined. Meanwhile, the sheriff had loaded the body back onto a horse, intending to take it to the coroner. He declined Alexandras offer of a hot toddy before he left.

"I'm much obliged," he said, "but its a bit too early for me. Preacher Quint, do you want to pray over this body before I go?"

Quint shook his head. "It would be a waste of time, Sheriff," he answered. "That one is already sizzling in Satan's lair, and nothing can help him. Miss Alexandra, I wouldn't mind wetting my whistle with a sip of that bourbon neat, if it's handy."

After the sheriff rode away, accompanied by Colonel Claibourne, Toby went inside with the others.

Over coffee—and bourbon for Preacher Quint—the men discussed Toby's plan to track Sewell down and bring him to justice. Alex and Jonah objected to his going alone, but the most insistent opposition came from Alexandra. "It just doesn't make sense," she said. "I won't debate the point that Dad and Jonah should stay here to protect the
