“LLO?”

Franks voice sounded so sleepy that Daniel redid the math in his head to make sure he hadnt miscalculated the time difference. No, it was after noon in Quebec.

“Hi, Frank. Its Dany. We hadnt heard from you, and I wanted to check on your sister.” “They delivered the baby at four this morning,” Frank said, yawning. “She was only at thirty-two weeks, but they said it was either that or lose both of them.”

“Then Ive caught you at a bad time,” Daniel said. “Im sorry. I tried to call when I thought for sure youd be awake.” “Its all right,” Frank replied. “You couldnt have known. Im sorry I didnt call sooner, but its been touch and go the whole time and, well, given the way I left….”

“Well talk about that when you get back,” Daniel said quickly, not wanting to get into their last encounter over the phone. “Its waited this long. Another week and a half wont hurt.”

“I hope Ill be able to leave before then,” Frank said, another yawn audible through the phone. “Nadines problems were caused by the pregnancy. Now that the babys born, she should stabilize quickly, so its more a question of how Pauline does. She was born awfully early.”

“Yeah,” Daniel said. He knew nothing about babies, but even he knew that the earlier they were born, the more chances there were for health problems. “Keep us in the loop, will you? I know we havent met your family, but, well, we think of you as one of our family now, okay?”

“Thanks,” Frank said, yawning a third time. Daniel sighed. “Get some sleep and call when youre more awake. You arent even going to remember this conversation.”

“Ill remember,” Frank promised. “Talk to you soon.”

“Sleep well.” Daniel hung up the phone and stared at it blankly, not sure how to interpret the conversation. Most of it was straightforward. He could give everyone the good news that Franks sister had her baby and was doing better, that the baby was alive and fighting to stay that way. The thorny part was the few words that dealt with them. He snorted. Them. Like there was a them. They were a team, but beyond that, theyd shared one aborted encounter. An incredibly erotic encounter, but still only one, and not even a complete one.

He sighed. He didnt want to have this conversation over the phone. He wasnt sure he wanted to have the conversation at all, but if they had to have it, he wanted to see Franks face as they talked. He needed that or hed lose his nerve completely.

He called Jean-Paul and gave him the update and then he called Isabelle. “But thats good news,” Isabelle said when hed finished the rundown of what Frank had said. “Why do you sound so down?”

“I dunno,” Daniel said. “I guess I just miss him.”

Isabelle didnt say anything for so long that Daniel almost asked if she was still there. “You really like him, dont you?” “Of course I really like him,” Daniel said.
