Chapter 5

“No,” she said, “I want to go back to the shop and do it tonight. You can stay here, though. Don’t worry about coming with me.”

“Not on your life! I’m not letting you go back on your own. Come on, let’s go.”

“It’s going to be pretty cold.”

“Then I guess we’d better wrap up warm!”

They walked through the silent wintry streets. No one seemed to be out, which gave the evening an eerie feel to it.

They arrived at the shop and headed into the back room. The program was still lying on the desk.

“I guess this is it, then,” Tressie said.

“Good luck,” Buford replied.

She picked up the program. For a moment nothing happened, and she was slightly confused - is this not working?

Then the old familiar fading feeling began, and she was gone.

Tressie was back in the opera house, back in a seat - except this time she was up in one of the boxes looking down. As she looked around she thought that the place was empty - none of the other seats were occupied. She wondered what she was supposed to do next.

Then she heard footsteps echoing around the hall. She looked down at the stage and saw Miriam walking out, hand in hand with a tall, handsome man.

Tressie stayed where she was. She felt slightly voyeuristic, but she didn’t know what else to do. She had to find out as much as she could about what was going on.

Tressie turned to face the man.

“Oh, Phil!” she said, “I’m going to miss this old place.”

“Come on, it’s not goodbye forever. You’ll be back soon enough. And it will just make the performances you do here feel that little bit more special.”

“You’re right, I know that you’re right. I guess that I’m just nervous. I mean, I feel as though I’m so close to getting everything that I’ve ever wanted! And tomorrow we’re to be married before we leave! It really does feel like a new start.”

“It’s going to be wonderful. Are you sure that you don’t want to wait to get married? Are you sure that you don’t want to plan a big celebration?”

“No! I want us to be married as quickly as possible. And I don’t need that many people there, after all. I just want to be your wife, I want us to arrive in the city as a married couple so that we can find a family home right away and start our married life.”

"It's amazing, isn't it? All this time, keeping it secret, and now it will finally all be out in the open."

"I don't know why I let them tell me that we had to keep it secret. For some reason, it made sense to me when I was just starting out singing here and I didn't want to argue. But there'll be no need to keep anything secret when we get to the city."

“Just a few more hours.”

“Oh, don’t say it like that, you’ll make me feel even more nervous!”

“But what are you nervous about.
