The best place to attach a mobile antenna is in the center of the roof (watch out when entering your garage). If this is not possible, the trunk lid of a sedan or front fender of an SUV will suffice. Run the antenna cable through an open window. You can run the cable through the door but be aware that the cable could become crimped and short out the wires inside.

Mobile to mobile operating success depends on the terrain. On a highway or in level rural areas, you may be able to talk for several miles. In a city, with many buildings and other obstructions, you may not find you can talk as far but the range will still be much farther than handheld to handheld.

Mobile to base

With the mobile and base setups described above, a home station may be able to talk to a mobile station up to ten miles, depending on terrain and buildings in between.

Base to base

The best range for MURS radios is between base stations. Antennas should be as high as possible but not more than 20 feet above the highest part of your house or apartment. In a dire emergency, use the highest antenna possible. You be the judge if you need to exceed the 20 foot rule. Range from base to base could be as far as 25 miles if both antennas are as high as possible.

Neighborhood and city networks

The scenarios above are the best for your family and friends’ communication. You can also use MURS for your neighborhood group or a larger city group. Use handhelds in your neighborhood with a base station as the control point of your neighborhood network. If you have an organized communication group with your church or city, several control points can be set up at base stations. These could be community centers, shelters, hospitals or homes in neighborhoods. Check for existing organizations already in place in your city that you can join. If none exist, create your own.

Motion Detectors

Dakota Alert also makes a motion detector radio that is weatherproof and runs for months on batteries. You can mount the motion detector radio on a fence post or an outside wall. Set the channel number on the detector to a channel other than the one you normally use to talk. Have a radio inside that is set to this channel. When something trips the motion detector, the radio will transmit a pre-recorded voice message saying that there is an alert in a certain zone. Up to four zones can be set up. Each zone has a different numbered alert message.
