Postraciality amounts to a general social ecology within which race and racisms are supposedly outmoded but where, in fact, racist expression has gone viral. As with viruses generally, it is not that every social interaction produces a viral outbreak, an instance or circulation. Some are immune, some are conscious about avoidance and precaution, some previously infected have learned from the experience. Still others may circulate in parts of the landscape where the virus is less visibly active, and even remain relatively untouched by it. This does not preclude the possibility of its activation. An outbreak can occur at any moment. Segregated or firewalled social spaces may artificially diminish the prospects for a viral outbreak, much as less densely populated urban areas might delimit the likelihood of viral spread. But this hardly undercuts the conditions of possibility for an occurrence or more virulent circulation. So with postracial ecologies. Racist events are considered occasional, yet the postracial conditions of their possibility structurally enable their proliferation, even at epidemic levels.
