The Tropical Isle Bar on the corner of Bourbon and Orleans streets in the French Quarter of New Orleans is the “home of the Hand Grenade”—it says so right on the sign. The Tropical Isle Company, which operates several bars on Bourbon Street, has made the drink the center of their marketing strategy, selling souvenir cups, shirts, and hats, as well as a powdered drink mix so you can make Hand Grenades at home. The shot is allegedly the “most powerful drink in New Orleans,” although its exact ingredients are a trade secret and the company will go to great lengths to protect their intellectual property. This shot is similar in color and flavor but is in no way associated with Tropical Isle’s trademarked product.
