Gnoll Bandits, Level 31

“The Dungeon is releasing monsters into the wild somehow,” I said, my mouth hanging ajar as I turned to see similar reactions on the faces of my companions. “We need to be very careful.”

CHAPTER 36

BLALOR RUINS

We set up camp just inside the dense forest and I took first watch. I needed to keep an eye on the dungeon as much as I needed to watch over my group and decided that rest could wait. I equipped my Charm of the Sleepless One to make sure I was fresh the next morning, though it probably wasn’t needed as I could go days without sleep at this point in my life without feeling any ill effects. Either way, I added a third Charge to my little trinket and was all the happier to do so as an idea occurred to me as a target came to mind for the enchantment, Lord Variyn.

I didn’t know how easy the hex would be to dispel, but I figured it wouldn’t be easy to detect as it was basically harmless and only caused nightmares without doing any real damage to the target. The next chance I got, I would test it out on him and hope he didn’t notice. I was sure it was within my power and not blockable by any oath to do so.

The night went on in mostly silence, with only a few distance roars breaking the stillness of the night. They were far enough off that I didn’t even turn my head in their direction, instead focusing on the dungeon and any additional monsters that might spill out. The dungeon itself was like a beacon of light in the darkness, the glowing runes bright enough that I could see a good area around it, but I had difficultly looking right at it. It was because of this that I nearly missed the next batch of monsters to come out of the dungeon nearly six hours after the first ones we’d seen.

A flash of movement, dark shadows against the bright dungeon, had me scanning the horizon. Whatever had been released was flying up into the sky and not running out like the Gnolls had. Unfortunately, with the limited light, I wasn’t able to get an Inspect off so whatever new threat had been released was lost to me.

What would cause a dungeon to release monsters like this? Was it related to the device used to destroy this area or was it just the nature of this dungeon? I wished Kora was with us right now so I could ask her questions about monsters escaping dungeons. If anyone would know about it, she would, but she wasn’t with us now and I had only my stray thoughts to work with. What if it had to do with the amount of extra essence released into the area?

This area was unique in all of the Wyrd currently, as most dungeons were having to deal with reduced essence since the Ley Lines struggled against
