CHAPTER NINE

The first nightmare came since his arrival. It, like the others, had no conclusive resolution. The platforms, like before, were hovering above a charred landscape. The frigid water forced his soles from the smooth stone. The horizon was gone. The low red sun was further away, an afterthought of what it had once been. Static noise in dull valleys grew. It’s no short of Eldritch. Greg is scared.

She’s coming. She’s gonna suck you dry, Greg! DRY!

He can’t wake up. The woman, the siren as he had come to know her, is upon him. Run… but where? All roads lead back to her… to it. What is it? Greg felt a scream fight its way up his esophagus. No luck. It was trapped, imprisoned beneath a tempest of horror. Channels like roots crooned, screeched and complained. Where was she? WAKE ME UP, WAKE ME UP – yet his eyes would not open.

His body did not obey.

A hand from worlds beyond dug into the meat of his right shoulder and tore. God, how it burned. Agonizing, peeling strips of razor sharp flame melted into his bone. Greg turned to meet her gaze. There were no eyes. Only two abysses paired together in the nightmare world he created long ago. She screams. Greg’s howl is silent.

Her jaw unhinges-

-he shot out of bed, chest beaten by invisible, painful fists. “Damn it,” his breath was distant, too far away.

“Oh shit, Greg,” Kara wrapped her arms around him.

His skin was damp with cold sweat. “Oh god,” he lurched forward, “oh god, that was the worst one yet.”

Kara hushed him, whispering into his ear. “You’re okay. You’re in Arcana.”

“How… how did I get here?”

Kara shook her head. “Oh, Greg.”

“I don’t remember coming to your room,” he clutched his chest, hoping to rip the pain out.

“You came here after you got some food,” she kissed his cheek, “sorry, I wasn’t expecting to deal with this. Greg, breathe.”

“I saw, I saw into her… there was no bottom,” he felt himself teetering on the edge of a chasm filled with sobs and tears.

She kept a hand pressed against his cheek. Greg’s head rested in her bosom, protected by weighty, feminine breasts. “You’re safe. Breathe. In, out,” she guided him.

Slowly, Greg came back from the world of cosmic horror. Leftover scraps of confusion faded. His eyes hurt. How quickly had he snapped his lids open? “I’m sorry, this is embarrassing. I get these nightmares sometimes.”

“How long has it been going on?”

Greg’s face winced in pain. He couldn’t remember. Why couldn’t he remember? “I can’t… remember. I don’t know.”

“They’re nasty dreams, aren’t they? How do you feel? The heat in you is gone, right out the window. I don’t even have windows,” Kara pet him.

He felt secure. “Like someone tried sucking my life out,” Greg paused and looked at her, “not like that though, in a bad way. You can do that other thing anytime if you like.”

“Trying to make light of the situation, aren’t ya?” she smiled.

Greg nodded, cupping his face in trembling palms.
