When I left the meeting hall, Sakura was waiting outside.

“Good”, she said. “We have much to do.” She walked towards the protectors’ garrison.

My mind spun and swirled. Churning with what Mara had told me. About the Vaa. I took a deep breath to steady the thoughts spinning in my mind.

I retrieved my hair tie from my pocket, gathered my hair into a ponytail once more and jogged to catch up with Sakura.

“You are confused.” Sakura didn’t look at me. Don’t ‘spose she needed to.

“A bit. But good having a plan now … knowing. Yep. Better.”

I didn’t mention the creatures Mara told me about, and we walked in silence.

When we arrived at the protectors’ barracks, I saw Kamen coming out of the stables with Ben, who gave a wave and a big, dimpled grin.

“S’up,” Ben called out.

I smiled. No matter the reason, I was glad these guys were coming with me on the trip.
