Chapter 14

Abu Dhabi

It was midday when Pat backed the Sam Houston into its familiar slip in the Intercontinental Marina. The weather was unusually cloudy, and the temperature was a comfortable seventy-five degrees. It was the weekend and the marina was busy with activity. Many of the hotel patrons were dining outside at the hotel restaurants overlooking the marina.

While Pat hooked up the external power, he heard footsteps. He turned and saw his old friend Mike Guthrie. The two men shook hands, and Mike helped Pat hook up the water.

“Are you hungry?” Pat asked. “I could use some Belgian Café pork ribs.”

“Yeah, but it has to wait. We need to talk inside, away from other ears.”

Pat led Mike into the salon and the two men sat across from each other on opposite couches.

“The prisoner you grabbed is Colonel Shalmani from Quds. He led the attack against the Chedi. He’s a sick son of a bitch.”

“I figured as much.”

“He turned into a real talker. He was willing to do anything to keep us from handing him over to the Omanis.”

“I’m beyond revenge in this situation, Mike. I don’t care what happens to some Iranian Revolutionary Guard peon.”

“This is where it gets interesting. Do you remember last month when the Houthis claimed they shot a cruise missile at the UAE nuclear power plant?”

“Yeah. On the news, they said they missed. It was the same week that the missile they shot at the Saudi king’s palace was knocked down by a Patriot missile.”

“They did shoot at the nuclear plant. The missile hit the side of a mountain in Yemen.”

“Okay, so what?”

“Shalmani and his Iranian team were the group who fired that missile, along with some Houthis. He’s also the guy who sank the UAE frigate with another missile—not a cruise, just a surface-to-surface.”

“I’m with you, go on.”

“The Iranians have three more cruise missiles deployed to Yemen. The only reason they haven’t fired them yet is that they realized they didn’t have the correct topographical data after the first one crashed. These missiles skim the earth at high speed only a hundred meters above the ground. If you don’t have the right topo data inputted, they hit mountains. When they do have the right topo data, it’s almost impossible to shoot them down. They’re so low, the terrain masks them from most air defense radar. The UAE doesn’t have an air defense system that could stop them. Properly programmed, they’ll reach the target.”

“What would happen if they hit one of UAE’s nuclear power plants?”

“The reactors are fueled. If they get hit, it’s going to be a nuclear event. A major incident.”

“What does that mean?”

“A nuclear cloud with a fallout radius of two to three hundred miles. Al Barakah is on the border with Saudi. If you draw a three-hundred-mile circle around it, then it includes Riyadh, Qatar, Dubai, the entire width of the Persian Gulf and even a small part of Iran.”

“The ayatollahs believe in all that twelfth imam end-of-the-world stuff. What are the chances
