HEAVEN...SIMPLY HEAVEN.

All her life the princess had imagined what it would be like, watching from the window of her father’s palace as the royal guard shed their cloaks and tunics and sprinted in all their lupine brilliance into the woods. It was like watching a flock of birds—able to shift direction and turn at a moment’s notice. Inexplicably precise synchronicity that baffled anyone who wasn’t a part of it, and made subtle mockery of the fact that they were technically unable to speak.

They spoke to each other in different ways.

Come on—faster!

When it had first started, Evie was terrified she was going to lose them. She was disoriented, frantic, and gasping for breath. It wasn’t until Seth slowed down, falling into pace beside her, that she realized things were steady, she was steady, and she was breathing just fine.

That’s when she bit him on the shoulder, and leapt past with a euphoric howl.

The rest of the pack took it up immediately, calling back and forth like echoes of a bell as they streamed like a predatory flood through the trees. Each step was quicker than the last. Each bounding leap was thrilling and effortless. The ground compacted beneath each springing paw, and before long she found herself digging in with her claws—forcing herself even faster.

Seth appeared a step behind her, flying gracefully through the trees with each of his long strides. The princess glanced at him suddenly, struck by something she should have realized before.

He finally shifted.

It hadn’t happened since he’d been attacked by vampires. After those who’d forced the bond claimed they wanted to know ‘how it felt as a wolf’, the shifter was half-convinced he’d never make the transformation again. He’d stayed human, even when it wasn’t the better option. Even when he needed to fight. Even when he needed to heal. Yet looking at him now, he’d never been happier.

I guess sometimes we just need to come home.

The two shared a quick look, a secret smile, then he cocked his head ever so slightly behind them. She glanced back herself, truly astonished by what she saw.

No longer was she trailing near the back, appalled by her own fledgling clumsiness and trying desperately to keep up. She had surged through the ranks and was sprinting in the very front, setting the pace for the others, deciding which way they were going to go.

In a distant echo, Asher’s words flashed through her mind.

‘You’re the Belarian princess. Everyone is in your pack.’

And this had to be a part of Belaria, did it not? The kingdom had many remote areas, and most shifters lived somewhere within its domain. The weather-beaten village, the little girls racing around the table at dinner...even Seth. Seth was one of her subjects.

She almost laughed at the thought. Such titles seemed utterly ridiculous as a wolf.

They were her pack. That’s the only thing that mattered.

And my pack is getting ideas...

An unfortunate bed of ferns tore to pieces beside them as one of the larger, black wolves bounded suddenly to her side.
