Chapter Sixteen

Apollo

Midmorning found me mulling over the many problems facing us and trying to figure out how to reach Blue and shake her out of her current state.

It was odd to be sitting on my examination table in one of the exam rooms where I usually treated patients, in my very own clinic. I was used to being the doctor, not the patient.

My thoughts flew to Blue, downstairs. Last time I’d seen her was when I’d tapped into the med cam in Robby’s room. She’d been holding on to Robby as if he was the only thing she had left in the world. Which is probably the way she felt.

I recalled how her face had fallen when she saw Leo’s portrait, how her bewildered stare kept shifting from him to me.

Who did she see then, Leo or me? Did she find him the better man, as I did? Could she get over him to be with me? Could I?

Her life was in shambles, and until we confirmed that Ray was dead, she was in danger. By now, Zero Tango had probably figured out she was important to us—to me. That meant his threat extended to her.

Right now, I was her only link between her past and her present, the only person she could rely upon to bridge the dangers.

I remembered her reactions, her rejections. You arrogant jerk. One night of great sex doesn’t mean anything. She wants nothing to do with you.

She’s in shock, the physician in me reminded me. She needs time to process. She’s strong, she’ll get over this. So will you.

I was not sure about that last one.

Jax had given me first aid in the helicopter but my colleague, Dr. Chavez, completed the job. She cleaned my wounds, gave me an antibiotic injection, and added a few vaccines, including the first of two rabies boosters coming my way and a tetanus shot to boot.

I counted myself lucky.

The shirt had done its job and only a couple of stitches were indicated. I could tell by wiggling my fingers and testing my hand’s range of motion that there was no muscle or tendon damage. I had a welt under my eye, a contusion on the side of my head, and other bruises and scratches.

All and all, not too bad, and certainly a much better outcome than I’d expected.

Under Jax and Kass’s watchful eyes, Dr. Chavez finished wrapping my left arm in a sterile waterproof bandage. “There you go, doc. All done.” She smiled at me and then at my brothers as she headed for the door. “I leave you in good hands.”

She exchanged greetings with Troy and Max as they stalked into the room and shut the door behind them. The small exam room was crowded with all of us crammed inside.

Max had washed the war paint from his face and changed into usual daywear—ragged jeans, Chacos, and a T-shirt that said Don’t do apologies, so unfuck yourself. He plopped down on the chair between Jax and Kass, looking down at his tablet.
